Sunny Shines In Drawn Test

Chittagong: The opening Test between Bangladesh and the West Indies ended in a draw on the fifth and final day in Chittagong on Tuesday.
The only highlight of the match was seven-wicket haul of debutant spinner Elias Sunny. It was the second best match figures by a Bangladeshi bowler on debut.


The West Indies, needing 226 to win off 37 overs, were 100-2 in 22 overs in their second innings when play was called off. The second and final Test starts in Dhaka on Saturday.

The host took a bold step before tea-break as they declared their second innings 119-3.
Earlier in the Caribbean first innings, Elias Sunny became the third Bangladeshi to bag six wickets in an innings on debut as the hosts gained a 106-run lead over the West Indies in the opening Test on Tuesday.
The left-arm spinner finished with 6-94 off 23 overs as the West Indies were bowled out for 244 in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh's 350-9 declared in Chittagong.

Paceman Manjurul Islam and off-spinner Naimur Rahman were the other Bangladeshi debutants to grab six wickets in a Test innings.

The hosts were 34-1 in their second innings at lunch for an overall lead of 140 runs on the fifth and final day of the match heading for a draw.

Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 16 at the break, while Shahriar Nafees had yet to open his account.
The West Indies added 100 runs in 17 overs to their overnight total of 144-5, with skipper Darren Sammy smashing a brisk 43-ball 58 with the help of two sixes and eight fours for his maiden Test half-century.
Sunny, 25, got two of the five wickets to fall in the morning session while left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan took the last three wickets to finish with 3-53 off 18 overs.

Sunny, who took four wickets on Monday, struck in his second over when he had Marlon Samuels caught by Raqibul Hasan in the covers. Samuels could add just seven runs to his overnight score of 17.
Sammy and Carlton Baugh (30) then counter-attacked to add 60 runs in just seven overs for the seventh wicket before Sunny broke the stand when he bowled Baugh for his sixth victim.
The West Indies captain completed his half-century with a six off Sunny, but did not last long as he was bowled by Shakib after hitting the second six of his innings.

Shakib also dismissed Devendra Bishoo for no score in the same over.
The second and final Test starts in Dhaka on Saturday.
